Bring the artistry and history of the Old Makenge Basket into your space. Handwoven by skilled African artisans, each basket is a one-of-a-kind creation, embodying messages of beauty, marriage, and family. Beyond their intricate designs, these baskets bear the authentic marks of use and tradition. The light residue you may notice on the basket is a natural result of years of service in winnowing grains, where fine grain dust settles into the fibers, occasionally setting with exposure to water. Before shipping, we carefully wash and brush each basket to remove loose particles, but some material remains, adding to its character and authenticity.
The distinctive untamed curled root that is at the edges of some of the baskets is an intentional choice to preserve this fascinating detail, highlighting the craftsmanship and rich story of this piece. These baskets offer not only decorative beauty but a deep connection to African weaving traditions.
