What is Bogolanfini
Bogolanfini translates to "Bogo - Mud; Lan - With; Fini - Cloth” in Bambara, the language spoken by the Bamana people of Mali. The process of making the mud-cloth involves both men and women where men are responsible for weaving 100% cotton, after which the women hand-paint the cloth with fermented mud and natural plant dyes. The cloth is then rinsed and dried, ready to be used for clothing, home décor and other purposes.
Each Bogolanfini has patterns communicating social status and meaning to protect the Bamana people. The patterns carry the the history, traditions and beliefs of the Malian people and plays a vital role in preserving cultural heritage and foster a sense of identity and belonging.
